Rosie the Riveter Visits Snow Rogers Students
Dr. Fran CarterDr. Fran Carter and her daughter (and former Gardendale Elem librarian), Nell Branum, presented about Rosie the Riveter to the 4th grade classes. She discussed how rivets worked, how she ended up working on planes in Birmingham, and how she married a WWII paratrooper, Dr. John Carter. Dr. Fran Carter, or "Gran Fran" as she is known by the students, and her daughter Nell travel around the country speaking to groups about the Rosies and their important role during WWII. They have also written books about Rosie as well as Rosie-themed cookbooks. While there was talk about the war, Gran Fran always reminded the students to learn from the past because it does not have to come to war if we are wise. Gran Fran is the great grandmother to 2 Snow Rogers students, Parker and Conner Branum. Their classes (Parrish and Carlisle/Durrett) were able to meet GranFran and ask her questions about her work during the war and her life during that time. The students were also able to wish Gran Fran a happy 95th birthday! Gran Fran and Nell autographed the books they have written and put them in the Snow Rogers library for the school to enjoy for years to come! By: Stefanie Branum
