The JEFCOED Adapted Physical Education Program and Vestavia Bowl hosted the annual Special Olympics and Unified Bowling tournament. Close to 500 students from across the county attended the tournament on Jan. 17, 18, and 20 at Vestavia Bowl. Students from The Burkett Center, Mortimer Jordan High, Fultondale High, Gardendale High, Shades Valley Technical Academy, Hueytown High, Pinson Valley High, Clay-Chalkville Middle, Clay-Chalkville High, Corner Middle, Corner High, Hueytown Middle, Minor High, Minor Middle, Minor Community, Oak Grove High, Center Point High, Erwin Intermediate, Irondale Middle, McAdory High, and Pleasant Grove High Schools all attended. Several Schools participated in Unified Bowling where Special Olympic Athletes compete with typical peers from their schools or in the Burkett Center's case with neighboring school Mortimer Jordan High School.
In the past, Special Olympics was limited to students with intellectual disabilities. The trend for the last few years is to pair individuals with typical peers for a more inclusive competition. Coordinators for Jefferson County are pleased that the Unified Sports participation has become more popular with students and teachers.
